The positions are expected to begin on 1 September 2026 and will run for four years of full-time doctoral study.

About the Department of Education

The Uppsala University Department of Education (EDU) offers research and academic programs at undergraduate, master’s, and doctoral levels. The department conducts research in areas such as:

• Curriculum Studies

• Education

• Sociology of Education

With around 250 staff members, including 175 teachers and researchers, 45 doctoral students, and 30 administrators, the department maintains a strong research environment dedicated to understanding how education shapes individuals and societies.

The field of Education explores how people—children, youth, and adults—learn and develop in different social, cultural, and institutional contexts such as schools, families, workplaces, and higher education institutions. Researchers examine how knowledge, values, and skills are created, maintained, and transformed across generations.

PhD Research Areas

Successful applicants will join one of the department’s research groups, each focusing on different aspects of education and learning.

1. Studies in Educational Policy and Educational Philosophy (STEP)

This group explores educational governance, policy, and professional practices. Research focuses on how knowledge, values, and identities are shaped through educational systems, particularly in relation to globalization, migration, digitalization, and the knowledge-based society.

2. Research on Educational Leadership (REL)

REL examines the relationship between education, leadership, and learning. The interdisciplinary group studies leadership practices and the conditions that support or limit leadership in educational contexts.

3. Childhood, Learning and Identities as Interactional Practices (CLIP)

CLIP focuses on children’s and young people’s social interactions, identities, and learning processes in schools and everyday life. Research themes include multilingualism, digital practices, mobility, and social relations.

4. Child and Youth Studies (BUV)

This group studies identity and socialization among children, youth, and young adults across different social environments. The research critically explores inequalities and structural conditions affecting young people.

5. Pedagogics and Special Needs (PS)

The PS group focuses on inclusive education and support systems, particularly in schools and preschools. Research includes theoretical analyses, empirical studies, and interventions aimed at improving learning environments.

PhD Responsibilities

The doctoral position is a full-time temporary employment for four years leading to a PhD dissertation. As a doctoral candidate, you will:

• Conduct independent research and write a doctoral thesis

• Participate actively in departmental seminars and academic activities

• Complete required doctoral coursework

• Contribute to teaching or administrative duties (up to 20%), which may extend the employment period beyond four years

Eligibility Requirements

Applicants must meet the general requirements for doctoral studies at Uppsala University. To be eligible, candidates must have:

• An advanced degree (Master’s level or equivalent)

• At least 240 ECTS credits, including 60 credits at advanced level

• At least 90 credits in Education or an equivalent relevant field

• Excellent written and spoken English

Knowledge of Swedish is not required at the time of application, but admitted candidates are expected to learn Swedish during the program.
