SYPALA 2026: IMANI Opens Applications for Africa’s Premier Student & Young Professionals Policy Seminar
The IMANI Center for Policy & Education has officially opened applications for the 12th Students and Young Professionals African Liberty Academy (SYPALA) 2026, its flagship pan-African summer seminar designed to cultivate the next generation of African policy and business leaders.
SYPALA is a highly competitive residential program that brings together outstanding undergraduate students and recent graduates from across Africa who are passionate about strengthening economic resilience and advancing inclusive governance within their countries. Admission into the program is based solely on the quality of the applicant’s essay, making intellectual rigor, originality, and policy insight the core selection criteria.
About SYPALA
SYPALA is a four-day immersive academic seminar organized by the IMANI Center for Policy & Education. Over the years, the academy has built a strong reputation for convening high-performing young Africans to engage deeply with ideas around public policy, free markets, institutional reform, and governance innovation.
Participants benefit from interactive sessions led by world-class faculty, peer-to-peer learning with top students from across the continent, and exposure to practical frameworks for solving Africa’s most pressing economic challenges.
Essay Competition Overview
Applicants are required to submit an original essay addressing the following topic:
Essay Topic:
Identify one specific policy or business innovation that can significantly enhance economic resilience and foster inclusive governance in a specific African country. Applicants must justify their choice by analyzing the current challenge, explaining how the proposed solution works, and outlining one major potential obstacle to its implementation.
Successful essays will demonstrate strong analytical depth, originality of thought, clarity of argument, and a clear interest in economic resilience and inclusive governance.
Essay Requirements

Each essay must include a summary of no more than 200 words

Proper citations and references are required

All submissions must be original; plagiarism results in automatic disqualification

Each applicant may submit only one entry
Applicants must also include their institution, current academic level, course of study, and age at the time of submission.
