Two Fully Funded PhD Positions in Human Geography – Uppsala University (Start: 1 September 2026)

The Department of Human Geography at Uppsala University invites applications for two full-time, fully funded PhD positions starting 1 September 2026. The department is a vibrant research environment with around 45 employees and internationally recognized expertise across qualitative, quantitative, spatial, urban, and regional studies.
These positions are four-year, salaried doctoral appointments covering full tuition, salary, and benefits under Swedish employment regulations.
About the Doctoral Programme
The PhD programme comprises 240 higher education credits, including:
- 180 credits for the dissertation
- 60 credits in doctoral-level coursework
Doctoral candidates may allocate up to 20% of their time to teaching or administrative tasks.
Position 1: Housing & Urban Geography (Placement at IBF)
Affiliated with Uppsala University’s Institute for Housing and Urban Research (IBF), this position focuses on themes in:
- Housing studies
- Urban geography
- Urban development, segregation, spatial inequalities, or related topics
The selected candidate follows the Human Geography doctoral curriculum while being primarily based at IBF.

Position 2: Political Ecology
This position supports projects in political ecology, with openness to themes including:
- Feminist political ecology
- Decolonial perspectives
- Environmental justice
- Resource politics
- Human–environment relations
Applicants proposing any project within political ecology are welcome.
Qualifications
To be eligible for admission by 30 June 2026, applicants must meet ONE of the following:
- Hold a Master’s degree in Human Geography, or
- Have 240 university credits, including at least 60 at Master’s level with a 15-credit independent project, or
- Have acquired equivalent knowledge in another way.

- Cover letter (max 2 pages) introducing yourself, your academic motivations, and interest in Human Geography at Uppsala
- CV (education, work experience, relevant skills)
- Research plan (3–4 pages) including:
- Background & research questions
- Significance
- Short literature overview
- Proposed methods
- Transcripts of all higher education
- One academic writing sample (English or Swedish)
- Contact details for two academic referees
Interviews will take place in April 2026, with final decisions communicated by mid-May 2026.
Employment Terms
- Full-time (100%), fixed-term doctoral employment
- Start date: 1 September 2026 (or as agreed)
- Salary: Individual, according to Uppsala University’s doctoral pay scale
- Employment follows Chapter 5 of the Swedish Higher Education Ordinance
