Climate Investment Challenge 2026: Global Competition for Bold, Data-Driven Climate Finance Solutions

Climate Investment Challenge 2026: Global Competition for Bold, Data-Driven Climate Finance Solutions

The Climate Investment Challenge (CIC) is an international competition inviting postgraduate students to develop innovative, implementable solutions to real-world climate investment problems. Now in its seventh year, the Challenge continues to attract participants from across disciplines and regions, all committed to transforming how capital is mobilised for climate-positive outcomes.

CIC stands at the intersection of climate science, finance, and analytics, encouraging students to push beyond theoretical frameworks and design practical tools, mechanisms, and metrics that can reshape investment decision-making. Whether addressing capital deployment, climate risk assessment, or transparency challenges, participants gain exposure to the rigorous process of building climate solutions that can operate at scale.

Climate Investment Challenge (CIC) for Climate Finance Innovation

Open to postgraduate students worldwide, the Climate Investment Challenge provides a unique opportunity to transform bold ideas into impactful strategies. Participants are encouraged to identify key bottlenecks in climate investment and propose solutions that either mobilise capital more effectively or bring clarity, precision, and accountability to climate-aware decision-making.

Students who take part gain experience in:

  • Designing implementable financial mechanisms
  • Building data-driven analytical tools
  • Structuring solutions suited for real markets and institutions
  • Presenting ideas to senior experts in climate finance
  • Engaging with a global network focused on climate-aligned investment

For winning teams, the Challenge offers cash prizes, visibility, and access to Imperial College London’s climate finance network, which includes accelerator pathways and potential partnership opportunities.

Two Prize Tracks for 2026: Financing Innovation and Climate Analytics

To reflect evolving global investment needs, the 2026 edition expands its scope with two distinct prize categories:

1. Innovative Financing Mechanisms

This track focuses on creative financial structures that can move capital into climate solutions at scale. Examples include:

  • Blended finance instruments for renewable energy
  • Outcome-based bonds balancing returns with measurable climate impact
  • New structures that reduce investment risk in vulnerable markets

The goal is to support mechanisms that can unlock climate-positive investments and address financial barriers across sectors and regions.

2. Climate Analytics (New for 2026)

This new category recognises that climate investment relies heavily on robust, transparent, and actionable data. This prize invites tools that support climate-aware decision-making through:

  • Novel risk metrics
  • Greenwashing detection frameworks
  • AI-enabled climate and nature-risk models
  • Insight platforms for public or private markets

The track encourages interdisciplinary participation, welcoming students with backgrounds ranging from environmental science and data science to finance and engineering.

Three-Stage Process: From Concept Note to Final Pitch

The Climate Investment Challenge follows a structured multi-stage process:

Stage 1 – Launch and Concept Notes

The Challenge opens on 16 January 2026.
Teams submit a Concept Note using the official template, with only one team member responsible for submission.

Stage 2 – Semi-Finals

Sixteen teams progress to this round.
Semi-finalists create a 10-slide Business Case Deck detailing their solution, methodology, and expected impact.

Stage 3 – Finals in London

Eight finalists (four per prize track) pitch their solutions to a panel of expert judges at the flagship London event on 11 June 2026.
Hybrid presentations are available to support teams unable to attend in person.
