The European Union offers structured traineeship opportunities in its Delegations worldwide, providing students and young graduates with hands-on exposure to EU external relations, diplomacy, development cooperation, and strategic communications.

EU Delegations’ traineeships are designed as educational placements, not employment contracts, and aim to build a pipeline of future professionals familiar with EU values and international engagement.

Objectives of EU Delegations Traineeships

EU Delegations’ traineeships are designed to:

  • Provide first-hand experience of the daily work of an EU Delegation

  • Offer exposure to a multicultural, multilingual, and multi-ethnic working environment

  • Enable trainees to apply academic knowledge in a real-world diplomatic context

  • Build a pool of young professionals with direct experience of EU external action

  • Support future careers within the European External Action Service (EEAS) or other EU institutions

Types of EU Delegations Traineeships (Four Pillars)

EU Delegations offer traineeships under four distinct pillars:

1. Funded Traineeships for Young Graduates

  • For graduates with less than one year of professional experience

  • Financial support provided by the EEAS

  • Most competitive and widely advertised pillar

2. Unfunded Compulsory Traineeships for Students

  • For students already studying and residing in the host country

  • Must be part of a mandatory academic requirement

  • Usually coordinated with local universities

3. Traineeships for Students of National Administration Schools

  • For students enrolled in national schools of public administration

  • Financing provided by the sending institution

4. Traineeships for Trainee Civil Servants

  • For civil servants completing compulsory professional training

  • Paid by the sending national administration

Who Can Apply?

Nationality Requirements

Eligibility depends on the traineeship pillar. Applicants must be:

  • Citizens of EU Member States, or

  • Citizens of EU candidate countries with a signed accession agreement, or

  • Citizens of the host country

Academic Requirements

Funded traineeships

  • Minimum Bachelor’s degree (or equivalent)

Unfunded compulsory traineeships

  • Enrolled in 3rd, 4th, or 5th year of higher education

Language Requirements

  • Ability to work in the main working language of the EU Delegation

  • Knowledge of the host country’s official language is an advantage

Previous Experience in EU Institutions

Applications will not be accepted from candidates who have:

  • Completed more than 6 weeks of paid or unpaid work

  • In any EU institution, body, agency, or office

This rule applies across all traineeship pillars.

Additional Requirements

  • Delegations may set role-specific criteria depending on operational needs

  • All selection processes are managed locally by the Delegation

  • Calls are published as Calls for Expression of Interest

Financing and Grants (By Traineeship Type)

Funded Traineeships (Young Graduates)

  • Grant: 25% of Local Agent Group I salary

  • Monthly ceiling: €1,200

  • Paid by the EEAS

University-Funded or Public Institution Traineeships

  • Minimum grant equivalent to 25% of Local Agent Group I salary

National Administration Schools

  • Financing provided by the sending administration school

  • Minimum 25% Local Agent Group I salary

Trainee Civil Servants

  • Paid by the sending national administration

  • Minimum 25% Local Agent Group I salary

Duration of Traineeships

  • Minimum: 1 month

  • Maximum: 6 months

  • Exception: Trainee civil servants (minimum 3 months)

Required Documents (Selected Candidates)

Depending on the pillar, candidates may be asked to submit:

  • Diploma or proof of enrolment

  • Language certificates

  • Judicial record extract

  • Passport or national ID

  • Medical certificate

  • Insurance certificate

  • Proof of financing (where applicable)

  • University letter (for compulsory traineeships)

Selection Process

  • Managed entirely by the EU Delegation

  • May involve:

    • Open calls for expressions of interest

    • Collaboration with local universities

    • Nominations from national administrations

  • Final selection always rests with the EU Delegation
