The Constructive Institute Asia Pacific Hub (CIAPH), based at Monash University in Melbourne, is proud to announce the launch of its inaugural fellowship program for 2026. This initiative offers a unique opportunity for journalists, editors, and news leaders to step away from the daily pressures of newsroom life and reimagine journalism through a constructive lens.

With 14 fully funded places available, the fellowship is designed to empower participants to explore innovative approaches to reporting, strengthen democratic engagement, and rebuild trust in news media.

Fellowship Overview

The fellowship is co-designed by CIAPH and the Cranlana Centre for Ethical Leadership, ensuring a balance of practical training and ethical reflection.

  • Duration: Four weeks, divided into two intensive blocks of two weeks each.
  • Location: Melbourne, Australia.
  • Dates:
    • First block: Mid-April 2026
    • Second block: September 2026
  • Funding: Flights and accommodation provided for interstate fellows and two journalists from the Asia Pacific region.

Who Should Apply?

The fellowship is open to journalists across all media platforms who demonstrate leadership, innovation, and a commitment to constructive reporting.

Applicants should:

  • Have at least seven years of professional experience in journalism.
  • Be ready to lead and inspire change within their teams and beyond.
  • Apply an innovation mindset to their craft.
  • Champion solutions-focused reporting that informs and empowers audiences.
  • Show a willingness to learn, share, and innovate alongside peers.

Special encouragement is given to First Nations journalists and news leaders, ensuring diverse voices and perspectives are represented in the fellowship cohort.

Program Benefits

During the fellowship, participants will:

Application Requirements

Applicants must submit the following materials:

  • A five-minute video introducing yourself and explaining why you want to join the program.
  • A 250-word career summary highlighting your professional journey.
  • A 250-word project proposal outlining your constructive journalism idea.
  • A statement of support from your employer (template provided).

For freelance journalists:

  • Evidence of an ongoing relationship with at least one media organisation.
  • A delivery plan for the proposed project.
  • A statement of support is preferable but not mandatory.

Selection Process

An independent panel will review applications and select fellows based on merit. The panel will also ensure diversity of projects, ideas, and participants.
