The University of Nottingham Ningbo China (UNNC) has opened applications for its Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences PhD Scholarships for the 2026 intake. This prestigious funding opportunity supports outstanding doctoral candidates to pursue full-time PhD studies at UNNC, with degrees awarded by the University of Nottingham (UK).

The scholarship is open to international students across selected disciplines and provides comprehensive financial support for up to 36 months, subject to satisfactory academic progression.

About the Scholarship

The Faculty Scholarship (Reference: 26FHSS) is designed to attract high-calibre researchers to UNNC’s vibrant academic community. Successful candidates will be enrolled in a full-time PhD programme starting in September 2026 and will benefit from strong supervision, international research exposure, and professional development opportunities.

Graduates of the programme receive a University of Nottingham PhD degree, fully accredited by both the UK Quality Assurance Agency and the Chinese Ministry of Education, with no distinction made on the degree certificate regarding location of study.

What the Scholarship Covers

The PhD scholarship provides:

  • Full tuition fee coverage

  • Monthly living stipend of RMB 4,500

  • Funding for up to 36 months, based on satisfactory progress

In addition, from the second year of study, scholars may have opportunities to undertake Graduate Teaching Assistant (GTA) roles or Research Assistant duties, subject to training and availability.

The scholarship is available for PhD research within the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences, including:

  • Education and English

  • International Communications

  • International Studies

Programme Structure

Full-time PhD programmes at UNNC consist of:

  • Three years of active research

  • One-year thesis pending period

Students are expected to submit their thesis within a maximum of four years from initial registration.

Eligibility Criteria

Applicants must meet the following requirements:

  • A Master’s degree with a minimum of 65% (Merit level) or equivalent

  • An Upper Second Class Bachelor’s degree (2:1) or international equivalent

  • Meet the English language proficiency requirements for the chosen discipline
