Alexander von Humboldt Foundation – International Climate Protection Fellowship 2026

The International Climate Protection Fellowship, offered by the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation, supports future leaders and postdoctoral researchers from non-European developing and transition countries who are committed to advancing climate protection and climate-related resource conservation. This prestigious fellowship enables selected applicants to conduct a 12–24-month research project in Germany, collaborating with leading institutions, experts, and practitioners.

Applications for the 2026 intake close on 10 February 2026.


About the Fellowship

The program supports:

  • Prospective leaders working practically in climate action (12-month stay)
  • Postdoctoral researchers with climate-related expertise (12–24 months)

Research proposals must address:

  • Climate change mitigation or adaptation
  • Preservation of ecosystems and biodiversity
  • Sustainable ocean and marine resource use
  • Sustainability topics (natural resources, resource efficiency, urban development)

The fellowship is funded by the International Climate Initiative (IKI) of Germany’s Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Climate Action (BMWK), in collaboration with BMUV and the Federal Foreign Office.

The program awards:

  • Up to 15 fellowships for prospective leaders
  • Up to 5 fellowships for postdocs each year

The Foundation strongly encourages applications from women and underrepresented groups, and welcomes applicants of any social, cultural, or educational background.


Program Benefits

Fellows receive a comprehensive support package, including:

Monthly Fellowship

  • €2,500 / €2,800 / €3,000 (prospective leaders, depending on experience)
  • €3,000 (postdocs)

Additional Support

  • Mobility allowance
  • Travel expenses
  • Subsidy for private health and liability insurance
  • Family allowances for accompanying partners and children
  • Optional 1–2 month intensive German language course in Bonn
  • Funding for hosts: €800/month (STEM fields) or €500/month (social sciences & humanities)

Eligibility Requirements

General Criteria

Applicants must:

  • Be citizens of a non-European developing or transition country
  • Have lived and worked in one of these countries for the last 18 months (not abroad more than 90 days)
  • Demonstrate leadership experience
  • Have strong English and/or German proficiency

Prospective Leaders (Practitioners)

  • First university degree completed within the last 12 years (by 10 Feb 2026)
  • At least 24 months of practical professional experience in climate-related fields
    OR
    A Master’s degree + at least 12 months of relevant experience

Postdoctoral Researchers

  • First university degree completed within the last 12 years
  • Doctorate completed within the last 4 years (or completed by Aug 31, 2026)
  • Academic publications in internationally reviewed outlets

Proposal & Host Requirements

  • A research-based project aligned with climate protection or resource conservation
  • A confirmed host in Germany, including a mentoring agreement
  • Two recent letters of recommendation

Selection Process

Timeline

  • Application Deadline: 10 February 2026
  • Selection Meeting: September 2026
  • Fellowship Start: January/February 2027 (German language course)
  • Research Stay: April 2027 – February 2028
