About the EU Delegation Traineeship Programme

The EU Delegation in Geneva represents the European Union’s interests and values within the United Nations and other multilateral institutions. Trainees are fully integrated into policy teams, contributing to real diplomatic work while gaining invaluable professional experience in a multilateral environment.

Each selected trainee receives a monthly grant to support living expenses throughout the traineeship period.

Available Traineeship Sections (2026)

1. Health Section Traineeship

This traineeship focuses on global health diplomacy and EU engagement with international health institutions.

Key responsibilities include:

  • Supporting EU engagement with WHO, Global Fund, and GAVI

  • Attending UN, EU, NGO, and think-tank meetings and events

  • Conducting policy research and drafting statements and briefings

  • Preparing analytical reports and background notes

  • Supporting high-level and technical WHO meetings

  • Assisting with communications with EU Member States

  • Supporting EU missions and organising events at the EU Delegation

2. Disarmament and Non-Proliferation Section Traineeship

This traineeship provides exposure to international security, arms control, and disarmament diplomacy.

Key responsibilities include:

  • Supporting EU participation in UN and multilateral disarmament meetings

  • Preparing briefings and meeting documentation

  • Drafting reports following conferences and negotiations

  • Supporting official visits and delegations

  • Providing general logistical and administrative support

3. Economic Affairs, Development, Environment and Digital Section Traineeship

This section covers economic governance, sustainable development, climate, trade, innovation, and digital policy.

Key responsibilities include:

  • Supporting EU engagement with UN agencies such as UNECE, ITU, UNCTAD, WIPO, UNEP, and WMO

  • Assisting with research and drafting EU statements

  • Writing reports and summaries of conferences and policy publications

  • Supporting official visits and diplomatic missions

  • Providing logistical and administrative support

Eligibility and Qualifications

To be eligible for these funded EU traineeships in Geneva, applicants must meet the following criteria:

  • Hold a Master’s degree in a relevant field (mandatory), such as:

    • International Relations

    • European Studies

    • International Law

    • International Economics

    • International Politics or related disciplines

  • Strong knowledge of the European Union and the United Nations

  • Excellent written English (French is a strong advantage)

  • Relevant academic background or previous internships in the chosen policy area are an asset

Candidates without a Master’s degree are not eligible.

Financial Support and Conditions

  • Each trainee receives a monthly grant to help cover living expenses

  • Costs related to travel, visa, accommodation, and insurance must be covered by the trainee

  • Traineeships are offered in line with local Swiss legislation and the legislation of the trainee’s country of origin
