Arrell Scholarships – University of Guelph
The Arrell Scholarships at the University of Guelph provide exceptional support for Master’s students whose research aligns with the mission of the Arrell Food Institute: producing healthy and nutritious food, promoting economic growth, and reducing environmental and social impacts within the agri-food system.
This prestigious award combines financial support with opportunities to lead multidisciplinary projects that address global food challenges alongside community, government, and industry partners.
Scholarship Value & Duration

$50,000 per year for up to 2 years (6 semesters)

Paid in three equal installments per year

Potential one-semester extension in exceptional circumstances

Offers are conditional on admission to an eligible graduate program at the University of Guelph
Eligibility

Students entering a Master’s program in Fall 2026

Minimum first-class (A-) admission average
-
Research must align with the Arrell Food Institute’s mission
-
Exceptional cases may allow deferral of the award, subject to approval
Selection Criteria
Applications are reviewed by a scholarship selection committee based on:

Academic excellence

Relevance of proposed research and alignment with the Arrell Food Institute’s vision

Community involvement or experience, including volunteering or knowledge-sharing
Application Requirements
To be considered, applicants must submit both:
1. Graduate Program Application

Submit a complete application to a graduate program at the University of Guelph by the deadline
-
Include a plan of research compatible with the Arrell Food Institute’s focus (e.g., food security, plant science, nutrition, consumer behavior)

International applicants should follow International Credentials Guidelines to verify eligibility
2. Arrell Scholarship Application

Statement of research interests and personal motivation (max 2 pages + 1 page for citations)

Application Deadline

April 15, 2026 – Both graduate program and scholarship applications must be submitted by this date
Conditions of Funding
-
Register for UNIV*6050, a one-semester experiential learning course, or an equivalent supervised project
-
Contribute time equivalent to UNIV*6050 to collaborative Arrell Food Institute projects
-
Maintain full-time registration and satisfactory progress
-
Cannot be held concurrently with Ontario Graduate Scholarships, QEII Graduate Scholarships, Vanier, or other listed awards
