Volvo Environment Prize 2025: Nominations Now Open for One of the World’s Leading Environmental Awards

Since its establishment in 1990, the Volvo Environment Prize has grown into one of the most respected global awards in the field of environmental science, sustainability, and ecological innovation. Recognising the world’s most influential researchers, thought leaders, and scientific innovators, the prize honours individuals whose work has made a transformative contribution to a more sustainable planet.

Over the past three decades, the prize has highlighted groundbreaking research on biodiversity, ecosystem dynamics, climate science, environmental economics, and the complex systems shaping our world. For scientists, researchers, and policymakers committed to environmental stewardship, the Volvo Environment Prize remains one of the most prestigious honours available today.

About the Volvo Environment Prize

The annual award celebrates outstanding scientific achievements that advance environmental protection, sustainability, and the responsible management of natural resources. Each year, a new laureate is selected based on the global impact of their research and their influence on scientific understanding, policy-making, and public awareness.

The Prize includes:

  • SEK 1.5 million (approx. EUR 135,000 / USD 142,000)

  • A hand-crafted diploma

  • A unique glass sculpture

  • An official award ceremony held in Stockholm or Gothenburg, Sweden each autumn

The ceremony brings together eminent scientists, policymakers, and leaders from around the world, offering a platform to celebrate groundbreaking research and encourage further scientific collaboration.

Who Awards the Prize?

The Volvo Environment Prize is awarded by an Independent Foundation hosted at the Beijer Institute of Ecological Economics, part of the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences. This institute is internationally recognised for its cutting-edge research in global sustainability, ecological economics, and the science-policy interface.

The selection process involves:

  1. Open call for nominations

  2. Pre-screening by the Prize’s Scientific Committee

  3. Final selection by an international jury of leading experts

This rigorous process ensures that only the world’s most influential environmental scientists and knowledge-producers are considered for the award.

The Volvo Group, a global leader in vehicles and heavy-duty machinery, funds the Foundation’s work. Sustainability has been a core value for Volvo since the 1980s, and its support of the Prize reflects a long-term commitment to environmental responsibility, research-based innovations, and climate solutions.

Eligibility and Selection Criteria

The Volvo Environment Prize focuses on two primary criteria:

1. Scientific Excellence

Nominees must demonstrate an exceptional record of scientific research and high-quality academic publications. Their work should have significantly advanced global understanding of environmental challenges and solutions.

2. Impact on Policy and Decision-Making

Beyond academic contributions, nominees must have played a meaningful role in shaping environmental policy, guiding decision-makers, or influencing sustainable practices across sectors. Strong emphasis is placed on real-world impact and the societal relevance of the candidate’s research.

The Prize welcomes nominations from areas including—but not limited to—ecology, biology, environmental economics, social sciences, climate research, sustainability transitions, and interdisciplinary environmental studies.
