Summer Undergraduate Research in Genetics Genomics (SURGe) 2026 Texas A M University | Fully Funded REU Program

The Summer Undergraduate Research in Genetics and Genomics (SURGe) program at Texas A&M University is now accepting applications for its 2026 cohort. Funded through the NSF Research Experience for Undergraduates (REU) initiative, SURGe provides a fully supported, immersive 10-week research experience for undergraduates pursuing careers in genetics, genomics, and the broader life sciences.


Program Overview

SURGe offers a hands-on research placement in one of Texas A&Mโ€™s cutting-edge genetics and genomics laboratories. Students work directly with faculty in the Interdisciplinary Program in Genetics & Genomics while developing an independent research project in areas such as:

  • Biomedical Genetics & Genomics
  • Plant, Animal, and Microbial Genetics
  • Evolutionary & Population Genetics
  • Computational Genetics & Bioinformatics
  • Medical and Translational Genetics

Participants also engage in:

  • Weekly research seminars & professional development sessions
  • Discussions on research ethics, graduate school pathways, and scientific communication
  • GENE 657: Command Line Skills, a 3-credit bioinformatics-intensive course focusing on modern computational tools used across genetics and genomics research

Program Dates (Tentative):
May 26 โ€“ August 1, 2026 (10 weeks)


Funding & Benefits

All selected participants receive full financial support, including:

  • $7,000 stipend
  • On-campus housing and meal plan (room & board covered)
  • Travel reimbursement to and from Texas A&M University
  • Access to university resources, mentorship, and research training

Eligibility Requirements

Applicants must:

  • Be current undergraduate students majoring in genetics, genomics, biology, or other life sciences
  • Preferably have completed their third year and at least one genetics course
  • Exceptional second-year students will also be considered
  • U.S. citizens and permanent residents are given preference due to funding restrictions
  • Students from underserved or underrepresented groups in STEM are strongly encouraged to apply
