WanaData Fellowships: Digitalise Youth Voices in Africa
The WanaData Fellowships are a groundbreaking initiative designed to amplify youth voices across Africa, particularly in the Sahel region, West Africa, and the Horn of Africa. Organized by Code for Africa (CfA) in collaboration with several international partners, these fellowships aim to strengthen civic engagement, promote digital rights, and empower young changemakers through gender-focused data projects.

Fellowship Objectives
The WanaData Fellowships focus on bridging content gaps and advancing projects related to:
- Gender data research and advocacy
- Cybersecurity and personal data protection
- E-democracy and digital participation
- Digital mobilisation in social movements
- Freedom of expression and human rights
- Youth civic engagement aligned with SDG 16 (Peace, Justice, and Strong Institutions)
By addressing these themes, fellows will contribute to building a secure, inclusive, and democratic digital space across Africa.
Fellowship Details
- Number of Awards: Up to 14 Fellows will be selected.
- Duration: 6 months (January – June 2026).
- Stipend: Each fellow receives USD 250 per month.
- Additional Support:
- Hands-on training in data tools and storytelling techniques
- One-on-one mentorship with experts in civic tech and journalism
- Ongoing support from CfA’s Communities and Academy Team
This combination of financial support and technical guidance ensures fellows can focus on impactful projects while building long-term skills.
Eligibility Criteria
Applicants must meet the following requirements:
- Be a registered WanaData member.
- Have at least 1 year of experience as a data scientist, journalist, or media content creator.
- Possess a portfolio of published work to demonstrate expertise.
- Ideally be based in the Sahel, West Africa, or Horn of Africa (exceptional applicants from other regions may be considered).
- Be fluent in English or French (bilingual applicants are strongly encouraged).
- Show a keen interest in digital rights, gender, and youth civic engagement.
- Have prior experience in gender data research.
- Demonstrate ability to track contributions and submit reports efficiently.
- Be willing to participate in mentorship, training, and outreach activities.
- Comply with WanaData’s policies on attribution, privacy, and friendly space guidelines.

- Applicants must complete the official application form provided by Code for Africa.
- Selection will prioritize candidates who demonstrate:
