GAO Student Trainee – Management & Program Analysis (Summer 2026)
The U.S. Government Accountability Office (GAO)—the independent, nonpartisan agency that supports Congress—is offering Summer 2026 internship opportunities for both undergraduate and graduate students. These internships are designed for individuals interested in public policy, program evaluation, federal oversight, and evidence-based decision-making.
Through hands-on analytical work, interns contribute to GAO’s mission of improving government performance and ensuring accountability across federal programs.
Location: Washington, D.C.

1. Undergraduate Student Trainee Program
Administration & Program Support (GS-04 / GS-05 Equivalent)
(Note: The official salary grade may vary based on USAJOBS updates, but the role is aimed at undergraduate students.)

This track is designed for current undergraduate students seeking experience in federal operations, administrative support, and exposure to public-sector analysis.
Key Responsibilities
Undergraduate interns will:

Management & Program Analysis (GS-07 / GS-09)
Who Should Apply
This track is for graduate students pursuing master’s or doctoral-level education who want to contribute directly to federal audits, program evaluation, research, and policy analysis.
Key Responsibilities
Graduate interns will:

Support planning and execution of in-depth federal program reviews

Collect and analyze qualitative and quantitative data

Identify patterns, inconsistencies, and program implications

Prepare high-quality written reports that meet GAO evidence standards

Present analytical findings to teams and stakeholders

Collaborate across disciplines and incorporate diverse perspectives
GS-Level Qualification Requirements
GS-07
You must be enrolled in a graduate program and meet ONE of the following:

Completed 18–35 graduate semester hours (27–53 quarter hours), or
-
Hold a bachelor’s degree with Superior Academic Achievement (SAA)
-
GPA 3.0+ overall or 3.5+ in major
-
OR top one-third class ranking
-
OR qualifying honor society membership

GS-09
You must meet ONE:

Completed 36+ graduate semester hours (54+ quarter hours), or
-
Hold a master’s degree, or equivalent graduate degree
