U.S.–Spain Young Leaders Program 2026: Applications Now Open

The U.S.-Spain Council and the Fundación Consejo España–EEUU launched the U.S.–Spain Young Leaders Program in 2001 with a mission to strengthen mutual understanding between Spain and the United States. For over two decades, the program has brought promising young American leaders to Spain to experience the country’s social, cultural, economic, and political landscape firsthand.

The initiative serves as a powerful diplomatic and educational platform, offering rising leaders the chance to engage directly with high-level institutions, policymakers, and cultural influencers who shape modern Spain. Through immersive experiences and substantive dialogue, the program fosters long-term relationships and deepens U.S.–Spain cooperation.

About the Young Leaders Program

The Young Leaders Program is a week-long cultural immersion and policy engagement experience designed to expose participants to Spain’s key institutions and the dynamics of U.S.–Spain and U.S.–EU relations.

A typical program includes:

  • Meetings at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, including sessions with Spain’s Secretary of State

  • Open discussions with senior editors from El País’ International and Economic sections

  • Luncheons at the Spanish Parliament, featuring conversations with leaders of major political parties

  • Visits to U.S. diplomatic missions such as the U.S. Embassy in Madrid and U.S. Consulate in Barcelona

  • Engagements with major financial institutions including BBVA and CaixaBank

Participants also experience guided cultural tours and travel between cities—typically beginning in Madrid and expanding to another Spanish region to gain multiple perspectives.

The program welcomes individuals who:

  • Are between 30 and 45 years old

  • Demonstrate leadership in their professional field

  • Show a strong interest in advancing U.S.–Spain bilateral relations
