Fully Funded PhD Opportunity at University College Dublin: LivePlatforms Project

The School of Information and Communication Studies (ICS) at University College Dublin (UCD) is inviting applications for a fully funded PhD studentship under the LivePlatforms: Livelihoods in the Platform Economy Ecosystem project. This prestigious opportunity is funded by an ERC Advanced Grant and will be supervised by Prof. Kylie Jarrett. The position begins on 1 September 2026, with applications due by 19 January 2026.

About the Project

The LivePlatforms project investigates how individuals earn livelihoods through various forms of platform-based work within the Irish context. This includes:

  • Location-based work such as delivery riding, home help, or care work
  • Online work including clickwork, freelance coding, or design
  • Online content creation such as streaming and influencer activities
  • Platform trading, including reselling and online retail

The selected PhD researcher will develop a focused research study on Irish workers engaged in at least one of these areas. Initial research will involve life-story or biographical interviews, with the possibility of integrating additional qualitative methods as the project progresses. The role also involves contributing to the data collection, analysis, and methodological development of the wider LivePlatforms research team.

Funding and Remuneration

This is a 100% full-time position offering excellent financial and academic support:

  • Annual tax-free stipend of €27,000 for up to four years
  • Full tuition fee waiver
  • Equipment and travel funding provided through the LivePlatforms project

Both EU and non-EU applicants are eligible for this studentship.

Responsibilities

The successful candidate will:

  • Complete and defend a PhD thesis aligned with the project’s research themes
  • Produce independent and collaborative research outputs
  • Present findings at relevant academic conferences
  • Participate in workshops, seminars, and activities within ICS and UCD
  • Complete 30 ECTS credits as part of UCD’s structured PhD program
  • Engage in teaching and tutor training as part of professional development

Candidate Profile

Applicants should hold a strong Master’s degree (2:1 or equivalent) in:

  • Media and Communication Studies
  • Sociology
  • Anthropology
  • Geography
  • Cultural Studies
  • Or other related disciplines

Strong English writing ability (C1 or C2 CEFR) is required.

Ideal candidates will demonstrate:

  • Experience or interest in platform economy research
  • Familiarity with ethnographic or qualitative research methods
  • Strong organisational and analytical skills
  • Ability to work both independently and collaboratively
  • Attention to detail and a rigorous approach to research
