Harvard Graduate School of Education – Admissions Cycle 2026–2027

The Harvard Graduate School of Education (HGSE) has officially opened applications for the 2026–2027 academic year. HGSE welcomes aspiring educators, leaders, and change-makers from around the world to join its vibrant academic community dedicated to transforming education across sectors.

This cycle offers opportunities to apply to the Ed.M. (Master of Education), Ph.D., and Certificate of Advanced Study (C.A.S.) programs. Please note that the Doctor of Education Leadership (Ed.L.D.) Program is not accepting applications for this year as it undergoes redesign.

• Teaching and Teacher Leadership (TTL) Licensure Strand

  • Residency Fieldwork Model: November 1, 2025

  • Internship Fieldwork Model Priority: November 1, 2025

  • Internship Fieldwork Model Regular: January 5, 2026

  • Admission Decisions: Mid-December 2025 (Residency & Priority Internship) | January 2026 (Residency fieldwork begins)

• Ph.D. Program

  • Application Deadline: December 1, 2025

  • Decisions Released: Late February 2026

  • Coursework Commences: Late August 2026

• Ed.M. Programs (including TTL Non-Licensure Strand) & C.A.S.

  • Application Deadline: January 5, 2026

  • Decisions Released: Early March 2026

  • Coursework Commences: Early August 2026 (residential) | Late July/Early August (online students)

• Certificate of Advanced Study (C.A.S.) in Counseling

  • Application available for HDE, PSP, and R&P graduates and current students.

  • This is the final year to apply, as the program sunsets after this cycle.

General Application Requirements (Ed.M. & C.A.S.)

A complete application includes:

• Statement of Purpose (max 1000 words for Ed.M., up to 1500 words for C.A.S.)

  • Outline your background, professional goals, and how HGSE will help you achieve them.

• Short Essay Response (250 words for Ed.M.)

  • Reflect on a belief or value challenged in your life and what you learned.

• Résumé or C.V.

• Three Letters of Recommendation submitted directly online by recommenders.

• Transcripts from all postsecondary institutions attended (unofficial accepted at application stage; official required if admitted).

• Application Fee: $85 (fee waiver requests considered with documentation).

• Standardized Tests: GRE is optional. Scores must be valid if submitted.

• English Proficiency (for non-native speakers): TOEFL, IELTS, or Duolingo English Test results (tests taken on/after January 1, 2024).

• Video Response: Required for non-native English speakers (120-second video essay).

TTL Licensure Strand – Additional Requirements

Applicants to the TTL Licensure Strand must:

• Submit a 120-second video essay addressing an education-related question.

• Provide a Subject Matter Knowledge template, listing all relevant coursework or AP credits for their intended subject area.

• Licensure subject areas include:

  • Biology

  • Chemistry

  • English

  • General Science

  • History

  • Mathematics

Ph.D. Requirements

Ph.D. applicants must demonstrate exceptional academic preparation, research capability, and alignment with HGSE’s research priorities.

• Decisions Released: Late February 2026

C.A.S. in Counseling

This certificate program is open to graduates and current students of the Human Development and Education (HDE), Prevention Science and Practice (PSP), and Risk and Prevention (R&P) programs.

• Requirements include:

  • A Statement of Purpose (up to 1500 words).

  • Résumé or C.V.

  • One or two letters of recommendation depending on applicant status (current student or alum).

• Important Note: The 2026–2027 academic year is the final opportunity to apply before the program sunsets.

Reapplication Policy

• Applicants may apply a maximum of three times in their lifetime.

• If last applied in 2023–2026, updated materials are required:

  • New Statement of Purpose & Résumé.

  • At least one new Letter of Recommendation.

  • Updated transcripts if new coursework has been completed.
