Scholarship Duration

• Master’s by Research: Up to 2 years (or 1 year if already enrolled between 1 Sep 2025 – 31 Aug 2026)

• Doctoral Degree (PhD): Up to 4 years (or 3 years if already enrolled between 1 Sep 2025 – 31 Aug 2026)

Deferrals may be allowed in cases of maternity, paternity, adoptive leave, parental leave, long-term illness, or carer’s leave with official approval.

Eligibility Requirements

Applicants

• Open to new entrants to Master’s or PhD programmes in Ireland

• May also apply if already enrolled but within first year of study (registered between 1 Sep 2025 – 31 Aug 2026)

• No age limit

• Must hold:

  • At least a first-class or upper second-class honours bachelor’s degree, or

  • If below that, a Master’s degree

• Must be affiliated with an Eligible Research Body in Ireland (which verifies transcripts)

• Must secure a primary academic supervisor (who can only endorse one applicant per call)

• Cannot hold a permanent academic staff position at an Irish or international institution

• Must not already hold a Master’s degree (if applying for a Master’s award) or a PhD (if applying for a doctoral award)

Nationality Categories

• Category 1: EU/EEA/Switzerland/UK/Ukraine nationals who have resided in these areas for 3 of the past 5 years

• Category 2: All other applicants (a limited number of awards available for exceptional candidates)
