The AU Media Fellowship 3.0 is guided by three core priorities: producing high-quality, impactful content; ensuring strong alignment with the objectives and institutional frameworks of the African Union; and expanding outreach to maximise the Fellowship’s reach and influence. By balancing these strategic areas, the Fellowship aims to remain sustainable, institutionally anchored, and scalable driving credible storytelling that supports Africa’s development agenda as outlined in Agenda 2063.

Thematic Tracks

In line with the mandates of the African Union and Africa’s development framework, Agenda 2063, the AU Media Fellowship Cohort 3 to be launched in will focus on 6 thematic tracks which cover various sectoral issues and applicants should ensure their applications are submitted in line with the theme(s) that are of their area of interest and focus under each thematic track.

Take Note: In each of the thematic tracks, it will be required that all content produced incorporates and addresses issues of women and youth to showcase aspects of economic empowerment and inclusion. In addition, the foundational role of education and training must be factored in.

2. Emerging Economic Sectors – Sports & Creative Industries

This theme explores Africa’s rapidly growing sports and creative sectors as powerful engines for inclusive economic growth, job creation, and cultural expression. It invites stories that highlight how these emerging industries can unlock new opportunities for youth, strengthen local economies, and position Africa as a global hub for innovation and talent.

Story proposals should address:

  • The development of Africa’s sports economy, including its potential to drive economic growth, generate employment, foster youth development, boost tourism, and stimulate investment in sports infrastructure.
  • The rise of Africa’s cultural and creative industries (CCIs) spanning performing and visual arts, audio-visual and multimedia production, publishing, music, gaming, interactive media, cultural heritage, architecture, and fashion with a focus on stories that advocate for increased investment and policy support to grow the CCIs into a leading economic sector for Africa’s future.

3. Agricultural Development & Environment Management

This theme highlights Africa’s commitment to transforming its agricultural sector and safeguarding its environment to ensure food security, sustainable livelihoods, and climate resilience. It seeks stories that showcase innovative practices, investments, and regional collaborations advancing a greener, more sustainable Africa.

Story proposals should address:

  • • Investment in sustainable, modern agriculture and agribusiness in line with the Comprehensive Africa Agriculture Development Programme (CAADP).
  • • Initiatives promoting environmental sustainability and climate action through renewable energy, reforestation, and regional projects such as the Great Green Wall of Africa.
  • • The emerging potential of Africa’s Blue Economy, including sustainable use of ocean and water resources for economic growth, improved livelihoods, and ecosystem health.

4. Promoting Good Governance

This theme focuses on the essential role of good governance in driving social and economic development, peace, security, and stability across Africa. It calls for stories that highlight efforts to strengthen democratic institutions, uphold the rule of law, and promote transparency, accountability, and respect for human rights as foundations for inclusive and sustainable development.

Story proposals should address:

  • How good governance practices contribute to social and economic progress, peacebuilding, and stability.
  • Initiatives that advance transparency, accountability, and the rule of law at local, national, or regional levels.
  • Efforts to protect and promote human rights and strengthen democratic institutions as part of Africa’s development agenda under Agenda 2063.

5. Promoting Africa’s Public Health Systems

This theme focuses on strengthening Africa’s public health systems as a cornerstone of the continent’s social and economic development. It invites stories that examine the policies, innovations, and partnerships advancing universal health coverage and building resilient health infrastructure.

Story proposals should address:

  • The importance of providing adequate, accessible health services to support Africa’s sustainable development.
  • Strategies and progress towards achieving universal health coverage across the continent.
  • The development of Africa’s pharmaceutical industry, including local manufacturing, research, and supply chains that reduce dependency and advance health sovereignty.

6. Infrastructure, Technology & Digital Innovation

This theme focuses on the critical role of modern infrastructure, technological advancement, and innovation in driving Africa’s industrialisation and competitiveness in the global economy. It calls for stories that highlight investments, policies, and initiatives positioning Africa to thrive in the Fourth Industrial Revolution.

Story proposals should address:

  • How investment in large-scale, interconnected infrastructure, cutting-edge technologies, and human capital development is advancing Africa’s industrialisation and economic integration.
  • Efforts to promote clean and sustainable energy solutions to power Africa’s industries and support climate-resilient growth.
  • The development of Africa’s emerging space industry, including its potential to drive technological innovation, data-driven decision-making, and regional collaboration.

Eligibility Criteria

To be considered for the AU Media Fellowship, applicants must meet the following requirements:

  • Citizenship: Must be a national of an AU member state

  • Profession: Open to journalists, bloggers, podcasters, and digital media creators

  • Work Experience: Minimum of six (6) years of experience in media or content creation

  • Age Requirement: Must be 25 years or older

  • Language: Fluency in any of the AU’s official languages (working language is English)

  • Professional Portfolio: Proven impact, innovation, and originality in media storytelling

Fellowship Activities and Timeline

September – December 2025

  • Induction, onboarding, and certified online training

  • AU study tour and the start of story pitch development

January – March 2026

  • One-on-one mentorship sessions

  • Attendance at AU Annual Summit and production of key stories

April – June 2026

  • In-person training and study tour with AU or partner institutions

  • Best practices exchange and ongoing content creation

July – August 2026

  • Continued capacity building, AU/partner engagements

  • Final submission and promotion of media outputs

 

Responsibilities and Expectations from Fellows

Fellows must commit to the following:

  • Develop and publish stories in line with the selected thematic track(s)

  • Participate in all training sessions and AU-organized events

  • Publish their final stories through their media outlets or alternative channels

  • Clearly identify as AU Media Fellows in their published work

  • Engage with AU social media and communications platforms

  • Maintain regular communication with the AU Information and Communications Directorate

  2. Cover Letter: One-page document explaining motivation and experience

  3. Work Samples: Provide links to at least two examples of published work

  4. Story Proposal: Submit your pitch using the official application template. Must align with Agenda 2063 thematic tracks

  5. Endorsement Letter:

    • From your editor (if employed)

    • From a senior media expert (if freelance or independent)

  6. Confirmation: Ensure you receive an application confirmation email
