Fully Funded Postdoctoral Fellowships in Japan for FY2026

The Japan Society for the Promotion of Science (JSPS) is now accepting applications for its FY2026 Postdoctoral Fellowships for Research in Japan. This prestigious fellowship offers international researchers the opportunity to conduct advanced research in collaboration with leading institutions in Japan.

Whether you are a promising postdoc or a senior researcher, JSPS has opportunities to support your academic journey. Fellowships are available under both the Standard and Short-term (PE) categories.


Fellowship Categories

1. Postdoctoral Fellowships (Standard) [P]

  • Duration: 12 to 24 months

  • Purpose: To enable postdoctoral researchers to pursue collaborative research with Japanese hosts in universities and research institutions.

  • Eligibility: Researchers of any nationality who have obtained a PhD within the past six years.

2. Postdoctoral Fellowships (Short-term PE) [PE]

  • Duration: 1 to 12 months

  • Purpose: To allow pre-/post-doctoral researchers from the US, Canada, and Europe to conduct collaborative research under the guidance of Japanese hosts.

  • Eligibility: Applicants must be citizens or permanent residents of eligible countries (US, Canada, EU, UK, Switzerland, Norway, or Russia).


Fields of Research

All fields of the humanities, social sciences, and natural sciences are eligible for support under the JSPS fellowship programs.


Fellowship Benefits

Successful applicants will receive:

  • Roundtrip Airfare: Economy-class air tickets

  • Maintenance Allowance:

    • JPY 362,000/month (Standard)

    • JPY 200,000/month (Short-term PE)

  • Arrival Allowance: JPY 200,000 (Standard only)

  • Overseas Travel Insurance

  • Research Support Allowance: Up to JPY 1.5 million (upon application through host)


Application Process

Applications must be submitted to JSPS by a host researcher in Japan via the head of their university or institution. All documents are submitted through the JSPS Electronic Application System, which will be available approximately two months before the deadline.

Applicants and host researchers should closely coordinate to complete the following steps:

  • Foreign Researcher: Fill out Form 2 and a Letter of Recommendation.

  • Host Researcher in Japan: Complete and submit Form 1 and upload required documents via the JSPS Electronic Application System.

  • Host Institution: Review and transmit the application to JSPS by August 29, 2025.

Step 3: Submit all application materials before the institutional and JSPS deadlines. (Note: Host institutions may require earlier internal deadlines.)

Important Notes

  • Applicants must stay in Japan continuously during the fellowship tenure.

  • Misuse of research funds or academic misconduct can result in fellowship withdrawal.

  • The number of fellowships awarded is approximate and subject to budgetary adjustments.

  • Short-term fellows may not extend the fellowship period beyond the maximum 12 months.
