Chatham House Mo Ibrahim Foundation Academy Fellowship (Fully-funded to UK and Open to Africans)

The Mo Ibrahim Foundation Academy Fellowship, a collaborative initiative with the Mo Ibrahim Foundation, offers an exciting opportunity for early-to-mid-career professionals to advance their expertise in international affairs. This prestigious fellowship provides selected candidates with the chance to work on an individual research project at Chatham House, London, for ten months, from October 2025 to July 2026.

Eligibility and Requirements

  • Citizenship: Open to citizens of any African country, including those holding dual nationality that includes an African country.
  • Education: Applicants must have completed a BA degree or equivalent and have experience in conducting research.
  • Career Stage: Ideal candidates are in the early-to-mid-stage of their careers, coming from sectors such as academia, NGO, business, government, civil society, or media. They should possess a deep interest in international affairs, their research area, and Chatham House’s mission.
  • Age: There are no age restrictions for applicants.
  • Concurrent Work/Study: Fellows are expected to dedicate full-time attention to the fellowship and cannot undertake other work or studies simultaneously.

Fellowship Structure and Benefits

Fellows’ time is divided between three core areas:

  1. Personal Research Project (60%): Fellows choose a project that aligns with their expertise and interests, guided by Chatham House experts.
  2. Leadership Masterclass Programme (20%): This program is designed to enhance fellows’ leadership skills, broaden their professional network, and deepen their self-awareness.
  3. Contributing to Ongoing Research (20%): Fellows support Chatham House’s existing research in alignment with its mission and strategic priorities.

Leadership Masterclass Programme

The Leadership Masterclass Programme is integral to the fellowship and includes:

  • Induction Week: A five-day orientation to familiarize fellows with the programme and begin personal development coaching.
  • Thematic Sessions: Fellows engage in discussions with experts on global challenges in international affairs.
  • Leadership Skills Workshops: Topics include policy impact, crisis management, and negotiation.
  • Leadership Briefings: Fellows interact with global leaders from various sectors to learn from their leadership journeys.
  • Project Presentations: Fellows present research updates, receive peer feedback, and develop presentation skills.
  • Personal Development Coaching: One-on-one coaching sessions for setting and achieving personal growth objectives.
  • Media Training: Fellows receive training on television and radio interview techniques, followed by feedback.
  • Career Mentoring: Fellows may opt for mentorship to guide their professional development.

Remuneration and Benefits

Fellows receive a monthly stipend of £2,565 to cover living expenses in London. In addition, Chatham House provides:

  • Relocation Costs: Travel, accommodation, visa fees, and UK Immigration Health Surcharge.
  • Research Expenses: Support for fieldwork, outreach, events, and publications.

Post-fellowship, alumni enjoy continued access to Chatham House’s faculty and a five-year membership.

Application and Selection Process

Applications are open from 12pm GMT on Friday, 28 February 2025, until 12am GMT on Wednesday, 19 March 2025. To apply, candidates must submit:

  • Research proposal based on the provided guidance

Selection Criteria include:

  • Relevant academic qualifications and research experience.
  • Demonstrated leadership potential.
  • Clear commitment to Chatham House’s goals and the global challenges addressed by the fellowship.
  • Proficiency in spoken English.

  1. Stage One: Submit your application. All submissions will be reviewed and shortlisted.
  2. Stage Two: Shortlisted candidates will be invited to an interview via Zoom.
