The Obama Foundation Scholars Program at Columbia University is now accepting applications for the 2025-2026 academic year. Scholars in this program participate in a dynamic curriculum designed to enhance their leadership skills and prepare them to address complex global issues. Scholars engage in an immersive experience on Columbia’s campus, benefiting from academic and skills-based training crafted by Columbia University in collaboration with the Obama Foundation.

Who is Eligible?

Applicants should be emerging leaders with a strong commitment to service and leadership, including a desire to return to their communities after the program and make a sustained impact. Applicants must be fluent in English and able to engage fully in Columbia’s rigorous academic environment.

Is the Program Full-Time?

Yes, the Obama Foundation Scholars Program is a full-time, one-year commitment. Scholars are expected to reside in New York City for the entire academic year.

Are There Requirements for English Proficiency?

Yes, applicants whose native language is not English must submit an English proficiency test score unless they qualify for a waiver. The minimum scores are 100 for TOEFL-IBT, 7.0 for IELTS, 68 for PTE Academic, and 120 for DET (75 if taken before July 2019).

Is the Program Open to Those with a Master’s Degree?

Yes, the program is open to individuals from diverse educational backgrounds, including those with or without a master’s degree.

Can Scholars Return to Their Home Countries After the Program?

Upon completing the program, Scholars are encouraged to return to their countries or regions and continue their service and leadership journey.
