About the Program
The Obama Foundation Scholars Program at Columbia University is now accepting applications for the 2025-2026 academic year. Scholars in this program participate in a dynamic curriculum designed to enhance their leadership skills and prepare them to address complex global issues. Scholars engage in an immersive experience on Columbia’s campus, benefiting from academic and skills-based training crafted by Columbia University in collaboration with the Obama Foundation.
Scholars are hosted at Columbia World Projects, which enables them to collaborate with experts across sectors to create impactful solutions to critical challenges. Based in New York City, participants gain exposure to an environment ripe with learning opportunities, network-building, and hands-on experience.

The Obama Foundation Scholars Program provides substantial financial support, covering the following:
- Monthly Stipend: Helps with living expenses in New York City.
- Housing: Furnished studio apartment within walking distance of Columbia University.
- Tuition and Fees: Covers up to four courses.
- Medical, Dental, and Life Insurance: Basic insurance provided during the program in New York.
- Air Travel: Includes round-trip airfare from Scholars’ home countries and any program-related travel.
How to Apply
Applications are now open! The deadline to apply for the 2025-2026 program is December 16, 5 PM EST.
- Application Form: Complete the online application form, including submission of a resume, a personal video statement, and responses to short essay questions.
- English Proficiency: Non-native English speakers must submit proof of proficiency through TOEFL, IELTS, PTE Academic, or DET scores.
- Recommendation Letters: Two letters of recommendation are required from individuals familiar with the applicant’s academic, professional, or community service background.

Yes, the Obama Foundation Scholars Program is a full-time, one-year commitment. Scholars are expected to reside in New York City for the entire academic year.
Are There Requirements for English Proficiency?
Yes, applicants whose native language is not English must submit an English proficiency test score unless they qualify for a waiver. The minimum scores are 100 for TOEFL-IBT, 7.0 for IELTS, 68 for PTE Academic, and 120 for DET (75 if taken before July 2019).
Is the Program Open to Those with a Master’s Degree?
Yes, the program is open to individuals from diverse educational backgrounds, including those with or without a master’s degree.
Can Scholars Return to Their Home Countries After the Program?
Upon completing the program, Scholars are encouraged to return to their countries or regions and continue their service and leadership journey.
