Location: UNAIDS, Regional Support Team, East and Southern Africa (RST, ESA), Johannesburg, South Africa
Type: Full-time, approximately 40 hours per week
Duration: 4-6 months, starting from December 1, 2024, to May 30, 2025
Stipend: Available for interns without other financial support
Position Overview
As a Resource Mobilization & Communication Intern at UNAIDS, you will support the Regional Resource Mobilization Adviser and the Regional Adviser for Communication and Advocacy. This internship offers hands-on experience in Private Sector Engagement, Resource Mobilization, and Communication & Advocacy.

About UNAIDS
UNAIDS is dedicated to ending AIDS as a public health threat by 2030, placing the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) at the core of its mission. UNAIDS focuses on:
- Ensuring equitable access to HIV services

- Integrating HIV responses into broader health and protection systems
The Regional Support Team for Eastern and Southern Africa (RST ESA) drives UNAIDS’ goals within the region, promoting equitable, people-centered HIV prevention and response efforts.
Duties and Responsibilities
Resource Mobilization
- Monitor trends in resource allocations and identify new funding opportunities.
- Support analysis of private sector engagements in the region.
- Assist in identifying innovative partnership opportunities with private sector entities.
- Organize training sessions on private sector engagement for country offices.
- Provide additional support as needed to the Resource Mobilization office.
Communication and Advocacy
Social Media Management
- Develop and implement strategies to enhance UNAIDS’ online engagement.
- Generate creative ideas to promote UNAIDS’ messages.
- Create videos, graphics, and photo essays for platforms like Instagram, X (formerly Twitter), and LinkedIn.
- Track social media metrics and prepare performance reports.
Visual Design
- Design graphics and visual content that align with UNAIDS’ brand for social media and publications.
- Create templates for social media, newsletters, and other platforms.
- Produce digital and print materials, such as brochures and posters.
Journalism
- Research and write articles, blog posts, and press releases.
- Conduct interviews to gather content.
- Edit and proofread materials, contributing to the organization’s editorial calendar.
Eligibility Criteria
Applicants must:
- Be currently enrolled in or have completed a degree program within the past year.
- Be at least 20 years of age.
- Be available for at least 2 months, up to 6 months.
- Have working knowledge of English.
- Hold a valid passport/ID from a WHO/UNAIDS Member State.
- Not hold any external employment contract during the internship.
- Not have a close family member working at UNAIDS.
Desirable Qualities
- Interest in development work.
- Ability to work well in multicultural environments.
Skills Required
- Proficiency with social media and digital platforms.
- Familiarity with graphic design software, like Canva and Adobe Creative Suite.
- Strong analytical, writing, and organizational skills.
- Creative thinking and problem-solving abilities.

Upon completion, interns will gain:
- Insight into UNAIDS’ mandate and regional operations.
- Familiarity with UNAIDS governance and program delivery.
- Experience with UN technical language and coordination.
- Networking opportunities with UN colleagues.
- Knowledge of private sector engagement within UNAIDS.
Compensation
A stipend may be available for interns not receiving other financial support.
