Empowering African researchers through the NELGA Research Fellowship
This initiative offers a unique opportunity for scholars and professionals within NELGA partner institutions to engage in research that addresses the critical intersection of climate change and land governance.
Programme Objectives
- The German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD) is funded by GIZ to support NELGA
- NELGA aims to enhance training, research, and connections in land governance in Africa
Eligible Applicants
- Staff members or students of NELGA partner institutions with a background in land governance
- Must be nationals of an African country and have completed at least a first university degree
Eligible Fields
- Background in land governance or related fields such as land administration, land economics, or urban planning
- Proposals covering the following cross-cutting issues will be given special consideration in the field of Climate Change and Land Governance:
- African Food Systems and Land Governance
- Pastoralism, Livestock and Land Rights in Africa
- Digitalization and Land Rights in Africa
- Gender and Land Rights in Africa
Selection Criteria
- Convincing research project and academic achievements considered
- Additional supporting documents also taken into account
Place of Tenure
- Fellowships can be taken at a state or state-recognized institution of higher education or a non-university research institute
- No funding for research at the applicantโs home institution
Duration
- One up to three months, depending on the project and applicantโs timetable
- Not renewable
Value
- Travel allowance ranging from EUR 280 to EUR 980
- Monthly research allowance of EUR 460
Terms and Conditions
- Fellowship does not cover living expenses
- Detailed report due one month after the fellowship ends

- Submit required documents including CV, detailed description of the research proposal and a description of previous research work (max. 10 pages);ย and academic references as well as copies of university diplomas/certificates and transcripts of record of all annual academic examinations
Deadlines
- Deadline for start of fellowship: 14th October 2024
- Fellowship starts on 1st of January 2025
