We are seeking a Young Professional Officer (Resilience to Climate Change and Disasters) to join our Regional Office for Europe and Central Asia (REU). This role is integral to FAO’s mission in supporting regional priorities related to food security, agriculture, and rural development. Organizational Context

The REU leads FAO’s response to regional challenges in Europe and Central Asia. It coordinates with country offices, oversees program implementation, and fosters relationships with regional bodies. This office is crucial in translating global strategies into regional actions, particularly in enhancing resilience against climate-related disasters.

Role and Responsibilities

Reporting Lines:
The Young Professional Officer reports to the Field Programme Officer/Regional Resilience Focal Point and works under the guidance of the Natural Resources Officer (Climate Change).

Technical Focus:
Your work will support the planning, implementation, and reporting of climate change and disaster resilience initiatives across agriculture, forestry, and fisheries. This includes disaster risk reduction (DRR), climate action, and preparedness for crises.

Key Results:

  • Provide technical assistance and support research, data collection, and analysis.
  • Contribute to capacity development initiatives related to climate change and disaster resilience in agriculture.

Key Functions:

  • Analyze technical, social, economic, and environmental data.
  • Maintain databases and provide technical support to projects.
  • Develop training materials and organize workshops and seminars.
  • Assist in organizing meetings and conferences, ensuring effective follow-up.

Specific Functions:

  • Support the formulation of DRR, climate action, and resilience projects.
  • Provide technical backstopping for regional and country projects.
  • Assist in risk and vulnerability assessments and post-disaster needs assessments.
  • Contribute to regional and country activities related to disaster impact on agriculture.
  • Support capacity development in climate change resilience for national governments, farmers, and vulnerable groups.
  • Assist in updating and implementing Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs) under the Paris Agreement.
  • Engage with private sector stakeholders in climate adaptation and mitigation processes.

Qualifications and Requirements

Minimum Requirements:

  • Advanced university degree in agriculture, agro-climatology, natural resources, or related fields.
  • At least one year of relevant experience in sustainable agriculture, climate risk management, or disaster risk reduction.
  • Proficiency in English (Level C); intermediate knowledge (Level B) of another FAO official language.

  • Experience in DRR, climate change, and climate-smart agriculture.
