About the Role
The International Centre for Counter-Terrorism (ICCT) is currently seeking a Visiting Fellow to support its research activities in the fall of 2024. This opportunity is ideal for researchers, practitioners, or policymakers employed at universities, think tanks, or other organizations (including government agencies) who are interested in contributing to ICCT’s mission.
Visiting Fellows join ICCT for a period of one to three months to work on a Policy Brief that aligns with both their research interests and those of ICCT. The fellowship offers a unique platform for professionals with a background in counter-terrorism or extremism, boasting at least three years of relevant research or work experience.
Deliverables:
- Deliver an ICCT Policy Brief towards the end of the fellowship. For more information on the Policy Brief format, see here
- Present research findings to an audience of Dutch policymakers towards the end of the Fellowship
Research Topics of Interest:
The Visiting Fellows research interests must fall into (one of) the three main research interests of ICCT: current and emerging threats, preventing and countering violent extremism, and the rule of law approach to counterterrorism. Research proposals that cover the following topics are particularly welcome:
- Online dimension of extremism; effectiveness of online PCVE interventions; legal frameworks
- Utilization of AI and gaming by extremists; PCVE interventions using AI or gaming; legal frameworks
- Youth radicalization
- Gender-based approaches to radicalization, counter-terrorism (CT), and PCVE interventions
- Cross-over between transitional justice and PCVE responses
Additionally, candidates are encouraged to participate in other ICCT-related activities and events, contributing to the office life and broader community.
Eligibility Criteria
- A background in (counter) terrorism/extremism is required
- At least three years of research/work experience
Duration:
- Ideally starting in September or October 2024
- Willing to stay in or near The Hague for at least one and up to three months
Compensation:
- The fellowship is not salaried, but ICCT provides an honorarium of up to €4,000 to cover travel, living expenses, and daily costs

- A cover letter (one page maximum) explaining your motivation for applying
- A curriculum vitae and list of publications
- A research proposal with a clear research question (one page maximum)
Deadline:
- Applications must be submitted by 14 August. Early applications are encouraged and will be reviewed on a rolling basis
- Interviews will be scheduled at a mutually agreeable time throughout the summer
