The PhD in SDC: Beyond Sustainability

Our PhD program is designed to change society by integrating multiple disciplines. The six curricula cover:

  1. Earth System and Environment: Focus on biological, chemical, geological, physical, mathematical, and environmental aspects of climate change and sustainability.
  2. Socio-economic Risk and Impacts: Analyze the relationships between climate change and socio-economic systems, aiming to support a transition to a fair, circular, and low-carbon economy.
  3. Technology and Territory: Research resilience, sustainable development, and circularity in communities, territories, and production processes.
  4. Theories, Institutions, and Cultures: Promote transdisciplinary education in sustainability and climate change through humanities and social sciences.
  5. Agriculture and Forestry: Focus on sustainable agri-food and forestry systems, particularly in Mediterranean regions.
  6. Health and Ecosystems: Study the impacts of climate change on ecosystems and human health.

Program Structure

The PhD program is structured on three research levels:

  1. Horizontal (Multi-Disciplinary Events): Expose candidates to the complexities of designing and implementing sustainable transitions.
  2. Vertical (Curriculum Events): Provide a broad overview of relevant research topics within each curriculum.
  3. Focused (Focused and Disciplinary Events): Single-theme courses defined by students and supervisors.
