Overview of the Graduate Program

The Mastercard Foundation Scholars Program at the University of Gondar offers 160 graduate scholarships over eight years, starting from the 2018/19 academic year. This scholarship program aims to support academically talented but disadvantaged youth from five East African countries: Ethiopia, Somalia, Eritrea, Djibouti, and South Sudan. The program is designed to help scholars acquire transformational leadership skills and demonstrate high professional and scholarly competencies to influence global, regional, national, and local socioeconomic development.

Housing and Accommodations

Please read the University of Gondar’s policy for admission to university housing. Cafeterias and lounges are available on each of the five campuses, providing meals three times a day. Lounges are open for 18 hours daily, offering meals and beverages to students and staff.

Campus Facilities

The University of Gondar comprises five campuses with various facilities, including:

  • Banking Services: The Commercial Bank of Ethiopia has a branch at the Tewodros campus, with ATMs located at multiple sites.
  • Library Services: Nine libraries offer a wide range of services, including computer labs and digital resources.
  • ICT Facilities: Technology support is available through a main office at Atse Tewodros Campus and offices in all faculties, with several computer labs and free internet access.
  • Guidance and Counseling Services: Available for all students, including community support services.
  • Center for Disability Studies: Sponsors and coordinates research and services for students with disabilities.
  • Center for Community-Based Rehabilitation: Supports the integration of people with disabilities into their communities.
  • Campus Security: Ensures the safety of staff, faculty, and students.

Graduate scholarships are open to Ethiopian applicants intending to be full-time students at the University of Gondar. Applicants must meet the following criteria:

  • Earned a Bachelor’s degree relevant to their proposed graduate program from a recognized university within the past five years.
  • Earned a minimum cumulative GPA of 2.75 on a 4.0 scale.
  • Be a citizen and permanent resident of Ethiopia (residing in Ethiopia for at least five years at the time of application).
  • Be youth applicants with disabilities or female applicants facing economic difficulties.
  • Earned a pass mark on the Graduate Admission Test (GAT) administered by the Ethiopian Ministry of Education.

Applicants currently enrolled in any graduate program cannot apply for the Mastercard Foundation scholarship award.
