Call for Applications: 1st Cohort of the Network of African Youth in Conflict Prevention and Mediation (WiseYouth Network)

The African Union invites dynamic and motivated youth to apply for the inaugural cohort of the WiseYouth Network, an initiative dedicated to promoting the critical role of youth in peacemaking across the African continent. Endorsed during the 35th Ordinary Session of the Assembly of Heads of State and Government in February 2022, the WiseYouth Network is a subsidiary mechanism of the Panel of the Wise, under the African Peace and Security Architecture (APSA). The network aims to enhance youth involvement in conflict prevention, mediation, and dialogue through strategic advocacy, capacity building, and deployment opportunities.

Key Activities of the Network

Members of the WiseYouth Network will engage in a variety of impactful activities, including:

  • Advocacy: Champion increased youth participation as leaders and partners in preventive diplomacy, mediation, and dialogue efforts.
  • Capacity Building: Enhance skills through training, mentorship, and peer-learning to ensure operational readiness for deployment in peace interventions.
  • Policy Engagement: Collaborate with policymakers to integrate youth participation in conflict resolution processes.
  • Experience Sharing: Document and share best practices, challenges, and innovations in youth-led peacemaking.
  • Community Initiatives: Organize local activities aimed at conflict prevention, reconciliation, social cohesion, and trust-building.
  • Global Linkages: Connect with national, regional, and international youth mediator networks.
  • Additional Actions: Undertake other activities as determined by the network.

Composition of the Network

The WiseYouth Network will maintain gender parity and consist of 20 members, with equitable representation from each of the five regions of Africa. Each region will contribute four members (two male and two female) with specific expertise in conflict prevention, mediation, and dialogue. The network will collaborate closely with the AU Youth Envoy and the African Youth Ambassadors for Peace (AYAPs) to ensure coordinated efforts.

Criteria & Qualifications

Applications are open to all African youth with proven experience in conflict prevention, mediation, and dialogue. The selection criteria include:

  • Experience: At least three years of demonstrable experience in relevant fields, supported by concrete examples.

  • Age: Between 18 and 35 years old throughout the tenure.
  • Availability: Willingness to participate in various activities and deployments as needed.

Each cohort of WiseYouth members will serve a non-renewable term of three years, allowing new youth leaders to join and contribute to the network’s mission.
