Exploring International Opportunities: Carlo Schmid Program for Internships in International Organizations and EU Institutions

Are you an ambitious student or graduate eager to delve into the complexities of the international administrative sector? The Carlo Schmid program, initiated in 2001, offers a unique opportunity to gain hands-on experience through internships while enhancing your intercultural competence.

Program Objectives:

  • Familiarize outstanding students and graduates with international administrative challenges and methodologies.
  • Expand intercultural competence through internship experiences.
  • Improve conditions and opportunities for future employment in the international field.

Program Implementation: Conducted by the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD) in collaboration with the German National Academic Foundation. Financed by the Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF). Supported by the Tönissteiner Circle through a mentoring program. Internships are accompanied by introductory and summer seminars, as well as activities organized by the alumni association (CSP Network eV).

Eligibility Criteria: Open to German students and graduates from all scientific disciplines. Applicants should have a background in international issues during their studies.

Application Requirements: Applicants must meet the following requirements at the time of application:

  • At least in the third semester of a bachelor’s or exam course.
  • State examination not taken more than two years ago.
  • Very good grade point average (not worse than 2.5 for law courses).
  • First section of the medical examination passed for medical students.
  • Excellent English language skills corresponding to proficiency level C1.
  • Proof of additional language skills (if required by the international organization).

Additional Requirements for Program Line B:

  • Specific application conditions for the respective position.
  • Degree specified by the organization submitted to DAAD at least 2 weeks before the start of the internship.

Selection Process:

  • Pre-selections determine candidates for the selection interview.
  • Final selection in digital form (May 14-17, 2024).
  • Communication of results in June 2024.
  • Final scholarship confirmations sent in July 2024.
  • Earliest start of internships in September 2024.

Application Deadlines:

  • Program Line B: February 6, 2024 (1:00 p.m. CET, portal opening: December 4, 2023).
  • Program Line A: April 4, 2024 (1:00 p.m. CET, portal opening: February 9, 2024).

Application Process:

  • Applications made online via the DAAD portal.
  • Refer to “Important information about applying to the Carlo Schmid program” for detailed instructions.

Required Documents: Ensure a complete application by submitting documents outlined in the checklist provided in the Important Information.

Important Notes:

  • Submissions after the application deadline are not possible.
  • No more applications accepted after the specified deadline.
  • Incomplete applications will not be considered by the DAAD; responsibility for completeness lies with the applicant.
  • Data protection: Application documents remain with the DAAD and become its property. Personal data will be stored and processed according to relevant regulations. Documents of unsuccessful applicants will be deleted after a reasonable period.
