Welcome to the Joint Japan/World Bank Graduate Scholarship Program (JJ/WBGSP), an opportunity designed for citizens of specific developing countries with a track record of supporting their nations’ development efforts. The program targets those applying to master’s degree programs in development-related fields.

Overview

The JJ/WBGSP offers scholarships for 52 Participating Master’s Programs across 27 universities globally, covering key areas such as economic policy management, tax policy, and infrastructure management. Please note that eligibility for a JJ/WBGSP Scholarship in 2024 is contingent on admission to one of these 52 programs.

Application Windows

To accommodate academic calendars, the application process is organized into two rounds:

Application Window 1

  • Dates: January 15 to February 29, 2024, at 12:00 noon EST
  • Participating Programs: Names of selected applicants announced by end of March 2024

Application Window 2

  • Dates: March 25 to May 24, 2024, at 12:00 noon EST
  • Participating Programs: Names of selected applicants announced towards the end of June 2024

Special Application Procedure

Developing country scholars commit to returning home after completing their degree to contribute to their countries’ social and economic development.

Eligibility Criteria

Details on eligibility criteria are provided in each call’s Application Guidelines, strictly adhered to with no exceptions. Broadly, applicants must:

  • Be nationals of World Bank member developing countries.
  • Not hold dual citizenship of any developed country.
  • Be in good health.
  • Hold a bachelor’s degree earned at least 3 years before the application deadline.
  • Be employed in development-related work full-time for at least 3 years.

Selection Process

The JJ/WBGSP uses a thorough process to identify candidates with the highest potential to impact their countries’ development:

  1. Two assessors independently review each eligible application.
  2. The JJ/WBGSP Secretariat uses average scores and specific criteria to select finalists.
  3. The JJ/WBGSP Steering Committee approves the final list of winners.

Scholarship Benefits

Recipients of the JJ/WBGSP scholarship enjoy comprehensive benefits, including:

  • Economy class air travel.
  • Tuition coverage and basic medical insurance.
  • Monthly subsistence allowance for living expenses.
  • The scholarship covers the duration of the graduate program or two years, whichever is less.

Exclusions:

It’s important to note that the JJ/WBGSP scholarship does not cover certain expenses, such as visa application costs, family support, extra-curricular courses, and more.
